The group was started in 1982 by a small group of ladies locally who shared an interest in quilting and were part of a growing band of others nationwide, who had formed a National Guild in 1979, The Quilters Guild. The name Greenstede is an old name for East Grinstead .
Several current members were part of that original group . We have changed our meetings venue several times since those early days and the group has increased in size . We now can accomodate 45 members .
Quilting nationally has had a huge revival of interest and there are many local groups in all areas. Large trade shows and exhibitions are held all over the country and our members enjoy visiting these,as well as the many local events. The group is affiliated to The Quilters Guild of the British Isles www.quiltersguild.org.uk and enjoy benefits from this.
in 2022 we will celebrate our Ruby Anniversary and hope to mark this with an exhibition. Our group has held a biennial exhibition of our work and this has, in recent years, been held in the Greenstede Gallery at Chequer Mead Arts Centre, De la Warr Road, East Grinstead which sadly is now closed. In 2018, the Exhibition was held at Trinity Methodist Church Hall, East Grinstead , our current meeting venue ,raising funds for East Grinstead foodbank. We hope to have our next exhibition in 2020 and future dates will be published when available.
